The email below is from a coach wondering which basketball practice drills he should focus on to maximize his team’s learning. As I always say, the key is simplicity! Pick out a few areas you want to focus on, then drill the heck out of those…
Below is a basketball tactics question from one of my newsletter. Read on to learn some fundamental strategies for breaking a man to man or zone based full court press.
One of the most effective basketball ballhandling drills is called the figure eight dribble drill.
To start, the player stands with his legs wider than shoulder width apart. He dribbles the ball in a figure eight pattern around and between his legs, alternating hands where appropriate.
Here are a few of my favorite Basketball Dribbling Drills.
1. Skip Dribbling Drill
The player stands and moves his legs in a scissors motion, with his toes pointing straight forward. He switches back and forth, first with his right leg kicking forward, then his left leg kicking forward and so on.
Just so you guys know- this was an e-mail sent to me kicking off a coaching consultation. The basketball consultations were a bonus for the first 25 Basketball Blueprint owners. I couldn’t believe it- the consults were gone in 7 minutes! I love developing basketball drills for youth teams- and these consults have been amazing. I’m realizing many of you have the same questions. I’m developing a series of 6 clinics that will go on over the next 6 weeks. If you’d be interested in hearing about these clinics- be sure to put your name and e-mail in the orange box in the top right corner. I’ll send out a big notice before each of the clinics so you won’t miss out.

Coaching youth sports for 25 years and played high school basketball. I am currently about to start working with a group of 11-12 year old boys. (Middle School 6-7th grade) This particular group does not have anyone that has played travel ball. They have mostly played Recreational league and Church League. The guards are small and quick and decent ball handlers.

With the big release of my new basketball software, Basketball Blueprint, I’ve been really busy today working on individual coaching consultations for “Diamond Package” holders. In these consultations, coaches send me a profile of their coaching problems, concerns, questions and I create a private video series (using Basketball Blueprint) to help them bring fun back into coaching basketball for kids. Here’s a coaching consult I was working with today….sound familiar?
