I always do this drill before a contest or during a warming up. It is called the 175 Shots Drill. It’s a good drill for a relaxed warm up; even before a game!
While coaching young girls (5th and 6th grades) at the first practice I tell my kids that I expect two things out of them. One, I expect them to work hard and, two I expect them to have fun. I tell them if they don’t work hard I will let them know about it and if they are not having fun I expect them to let me know about it.
This is a great drill that kids love since it’s a game situation. Defense must box out, max of 3 passes before shot. Drill focus is to simulate scoring on a fast break and how to defend when your a man down. It is our Team Favorite for sure! 3 on 2 2 on 1 [...]
This is a drill I use with elementary school boys (2nd to 4th grade so far) that has been popular. It teaches the boys to move without the ball, and to move/weave toward the basket (to be in a position to shoot). I’ve found this drill works best with man-to-man defense.
Here is my out of bounds play underneath the hoop. I call it 4 Corners.
As you know free throw shooting plays a big part in most games. So in practice we shoot & record 10 free throws 4 times a practice.
This drill is a spin off of the Celtic Drill that enhances conditioning, passing and layups. Remember, this drill is targeted for ages 10 and under who are just starting basketball.
This is a dribbling drill that can be done in two lines, or just as partners, depending on the size of your group/team, the gym space, and the number of basketballs available. Start the drill off slowly with emphasis on keeping eyes up and not on the ball then speed it up. Excellent skill builder.
Here is a conditioning/free throw drill that we used last year. It works well and the players like it. It is a great conditioning drill. It makes the players communicate because someone has to make sure that they have all shot their shots in each round. It also promotes leadership.
