Take a look at this submission from Raymond. A great example of basketball shooting drills that can work with all age groups.

From Raymond…
Here’s a basketball drill my guys tend to like because of the competitive nature.

Split the team into groups of three… one basketball.
One positioned at the left “block” near the hope, another at top of the key, the third (with the ball) at the wing on the right… 10 feet-12 feet out.

Shooter takes his shot and goes for his own rebound. Immediately the player at the top of the key fills in the vacated spot by the shooter;the player at the block fills in the spot at the top of the key. Hit or miss the shooter rebounds the ball and passes to the top of the key. That player quickly passes it to the person at the shooting position, who then takes the next shot. Round and round it goes from there until teams hit 5 straight shots or 5 minutes is up. Team that wins decides what the others will do (suicides, push-ups) while they do the opposite. If 5 minutes goes by without a winner… the whole team does both.

Focuses on quick passes and following shots under “pressure”. Can be done in “reverse”. Players pass the ball in the same direction, but move to the position where they received the ball from. Start with the shot. While the ball is rebounded by the player on the “block”, the shooter moves to the top of the key, while the player at the top of the key kicks to the left wing to receive the outlet pass from the rebounder. Hit or miss, the player at the block passes it to the left wing, and quickly moves to the shooting position on the right. The pass moves from the left, to the top of the key, then out to the shooter. (The player receiving the pass from the rebounder then fills in to rebound after kicking pass to the top of the key. Round and round it goes. A little long winded, but I hope that this is helpful none the less.

From Beth…
Obviously most of us have basketball drills that we have “borrowed” from other coaches and it is hard to think of different drills that most people don’t already know. Therefore I am giving one that I learned this year.

It is a basketball shooting drill called “Beat the Pro.” For every three shots taken the “Pro” gets four points. The shooter is allowed one three-point shot and two fifteen foot jump shots before the pro is allowed four points. Points awarded to the shooter are regular scoring (three points and two points). The first to 20 wins. Obviously after five sets of three shots the “Pro” will win if the shooter did not make any shots.

The shooter is encouraged to call out his/her score after each basket made. To make it more exciting you can have another shooter at the end of the court competing against the “Pro” and the other shooter.

From Ray…
Here’s a basketball drill we like to do to get our players used to sprinting down court and then gathering themselves for a quick shot.

We make three lines under one basket, the middle line has the basketball. The two wings take off running toward the opposite basket. The ball handler dribbles down court and hits the first player to reach the appointed spot. The other player has to sprint and touch the end line and head back down court. The ball handler gets the rebound and heads back down court looking to hit the other player for the shot. If the ball handler beats the non-shooting player back down court he takes the shot.

We take three different shots (3-pointer/mid-range bank shot/layup) as part of the drill and the players take the same kind of shot for a timed period. To add focus we sometimes keep track of how many shots were made and if they don’t make a certain percentage the whole group runs sprints.

Emphasis is on moving the ball down court quickly, getting under control for a game speed shot and conditioning.

From Tony…
I’m sure all of you already do this basketball drill but it sure has helped me get my big men going to the hoop higher and harder not to mention the basketball conditioning it gives them.

I place a basketball on each of the rectangles on either side of the hoop. Then the player must as quick and hard as he can reach down , grab the ball and explode to the basket while shooting. As soon as he hits the ground he runs to the other ball and does the same while you are setting the first ball back into its spot.

Have him do this as much as he can effectively, then just work up to more reps as he gets stronger and better.

From Cary…
To improve a defender’s ability to move their feet, I have found this basketball defense drill to be helpful. This drill can be done from full court or from half court.

Essentially, you have a defender who steps out between the dribbler and the hoop. He has to prevent the offensive player from dribbling down and getting a layup. The defender must put his hands behind his back and keep them there the entire time. He now must use his feet to stop a layup. Be sure and pair up players of similar speed.

From Steven…
One basketball drill that my players like is called “Mad Ball”.

You split the team up and place them on each sideline at half court spread out so they can sit cross legged with their backs facing away from the court.

A basketball is placed anywhere the coach likes on the court but the players don’t know where it is. One player from each side is given a number. The drill begins when a basketball coach yells out a number. The player whose number is called must get up as quickly as possibly and try to be the first one to get to the ball. The one who gets the ball becomes the offensive player, the other is defensive. The offensive player then tries to score to the closest basket the ball was located. Only one shot is allowed.

This drill helps teach them to hustle for a loose ball down court and also teaches them to quickly get up off the floor.

Many coaches struggle with coming up with fresh ideas for basketball shooting drills. Here is one suggestion for a basketball shooting clinic that was sent to me recently.

From Lloyd…
We have a basketball free throw drill that we like to use. It works on rebounding, conditioning and pressure free throw basketball shooting.

This basketball drill is called One and One.

Five guys line up, four on the free throw lane and one shooting free throws. The player starts off with a one and one free throw situation. The first shot is worth two points and the second is worth one point. The player continues to shoot until he misses, keeping track of the points scored.

If he misses the first shot of a one and one he takes off and sprints four full court lengths or if he misses the second shot he sprints two full court shots. On the miss the person that gets the rebound now becomes the free throw shooter and play continues as the one that misses runs his sprints. As soon as he finishes his sprints he becomes a rebounder with the other three.

Play continues until someone scores 10 points. After someone scores 10 points the other four have to sprint the number of full court sprints that they are short of 10 points.

From Chris…
Western Shooting Drill

Full court drill with three players under each basket as rebounders (each end of the court) and three players at the three point line (each end of the court) as shooters, a total of twelve players.

Six balls begin under the basket (three at each end). The basketball drill starts on the whistle as rebounders pass to shooters at the three point line.

Shooters shoot on the catch and run to the opposite end of the court where they catch and shoot.

The drill continues for one minute when shooters and rebounders rotate positions.

Great basketball drill for rebounding in traffic, catching and shooting quickly, conditioning.

From Dan…
SHOOTING DRILL-

Teammates face each other in a sitting position about 8 ft apart. With proper form and follow-through you shoot the basketball to your teammate. If the shooter makes a bad shot and his teammate cannot reach the ball in sitting position the shooter must run after the ball return and shoot again. Great for making them concentrate on what they are doing!! (10 to 15 min basketball shooting drill)

From John…
Free throw shooting practice. This is intended to better mirror game situations.

Rather than having players head to different baskets and shoot 5, 10, 15 free throws in a row, send three players to each basket. One player shoots 2-5 free throws, one rebounds and third player runs a ‘ladder’ or two ‘up and backs’ before assuming his/her spot on the line. Rotation would go runner moves to free throw shooter, shooter moves to rebounder, rebounder to runner and so on.

Helps practice concentration, collecting yourself at the line and shooting after fast paced action which is obviously when free throws happen in a game.

From Jay…
In the past, when I have had teams that have struggled with motion offenses or has a collective low basketball IQ, I have done this basketball drill that I call a PRO set (Pick and Roll Offense). As long as you can teach players how to set an effective screen and use a screen effectively, this basketball offense is simple to execute.

It’s a 1-4 set.
Point guard at the top and everyone else foul line extended.
3 on left wing, 5 at left elbow, 4 at right elbow and 2 at right wing. (in other words, odd #s left, even #s right).

When you call a play, such as 14, the first # is the ballhandler and the second # is the screener–So 14 is an upscreen for the PG. 24 would be a side screen by your PF for your shooting guard out on the wing.

If you want to get more involved you could call for 245, which would be a staggered screen for the shooting guard by both big men. The off the ball players must read the defense and move to an open spot or cut back door when help comes to the ball.

I’ve gotten a whole bunch of requests for basketball drills to use for fundamentals of shooting a baskeball over the past few days. Here are a couple of ideas sent in to me by subscribers. Keep ‘em coming!

From Jay…
Here is a basketball shooting drill I call “31″ that the kids like.

Start with 2 players at each basket with one ball for each 2 man team.
The first player shoots a jump shot and gets his own rebound and shoots a lay up, then rebounds and pass to player #2 to do the same. They get two points for every made jump shot and one point for the lay up.

The first team to 31 wins. With my team of 10 players I will use five baskets at once and I will have them move to five different spots to shoot the first shot. It also works well with 3 pointers.

From John…
Rebound-Putback Drill
With my 4th grade girls, I have them form a line on the right side of the basket. I stand on the left, shoot the ball over the basket, and the first girl in line rebounds the basketball and puts it right back up into the hoop. She goes to the end of the line, I grab the ball and shoot it over again for the next girl.

Go through the line a few times and then switch sides. Very effective offensive basketball rebound drill that leads to many baskets during the game.
