To prepare to play a [tag]basketball[/tag] game it’s important that players of all ages and abilities properly get ready for the game. To do this the players need to perform basketball warmup drills before the game. These drills should get the players ready to play by drilling each of the skills that they’ll be required to use in a game. Two [tag]basketball warmup drills[/tag] that will help players get ready are the Three Man Weave and the 3 v 2 Drill.
The Three Man Weave is one of the basketball [tag]warmup[/tag] [tag]drills[/tag] that will help a player with passing and lay-ups. This [tag]drill[/tag] begins with three lines out at half-court. The player in the middle line starts with the ball.
When the drill begins the player in the middle passes the ball to the player on the right side. Then the player who just passed the ball runs behind the player that just caught the ball. The player on the right, who now has the ball, passes the ball to the player on the left and then runs behind him. Then the player on the left passes the ball back to the player on the right (this will be the player who started with the ball). That player then shoots a lay-up. Then each player should rotate over one line.
The Three Man Weave should last at least long enough to allow every player to be in each line once.
The 3 v 2 Drill will help players get ready for basically every facet of the game: [tag]dribbling[/tag], [tag]passing[/tag], the [tag]fast break[/tag], scoring, and playing defense.
For this basketball drill five players will begin on the baseline. Player 1 will be in the far left corner, player 2 will be on the left side just outside the lane, player 3 will be under the basket, player 4 will be on the right side just outside the lane, and player 5 will be in the far right corner.
The [tag]coach[/tag] will blow the whistle and all 5 players will sprint to half court. Player three will do so while dribbling a ball. When they reach half-court they’ll all turn back to the basket. Then player 1, 3, and 5 will be on offense and players 2 and 4 will be on defense. Players 1, 3, and 5 will attack the basket and try to score while players 2 and 4 will play defense and try to prevent a basket.
This drill should be fast-paced and isn’t meant to take a long time with the players on offense trying to run any type of half-court offense. It should be more of a fast break situation. The drill is good for working on transition offense and defense.
Basketball warmup drills should get players ready for a game. The drills should help a player get ready for every facet of the game. The drills should also cause a player to break a sweat so that he/she is physically into the game before the opening tip. Two great basketball warmup drills that will accomplish all of these things are the Three Man Weave and the 2 v 3 Drill.
