Purpose:
To improve a defender’s ability to stay with the ball handler and prevent offensive players from penetrating into the paint.
Defend the Dribble drill, players work on improving their defensive skills by preventing offensive players from driving into the paint.
Setup:
Pair players off with teammates of similar size and skill. The first pair matches up on the wing, with the offensive player starting with the ball.
Execution:
- On the coach’s signal, the offensive player will attempt to drive to the hoop.
- The defender must stay in front and attempt to prevent penetration.
- The drill will go for 8 seconds before a new pair subs in.
- If the offense gets into the paint, they don’t shoot; they bring the ball back out to the arc and continue the drill.
- After each pair has gone, swap offense to defense and repeat.
Coaching Tips:
- Focus on defensive fundamentals: staying low, keeping eyes on the offensive player’s hips, and protecting the hoop.
- Emphasize footwork and lateral movement over using hands or committing fouls to stop the offensive player.
- Reinforce the importance of body positioning to angle the offensive player away from the paint.
Tips for Younger Athletes:
- Encourage younger players to stay low and maintain a strong defensive stance, helping them stay balanced and ready to move.
- Remind younger players to shuffle their feet instead of crossing them when defending, which will improve their ability to stay in front of the ball handler.
- Teach younger athletes to use active hands to disrupt passing lanes and force the offensive player to make mistakes, without reaching in and committing fouls.
Tips for Older Athletes:
- Challenge older players to anticipate the offensive player’s moves and cut off driving lanes early, forcing them toward the baseline or sideline.
- Encourage experienced players to stay disciplined, maintaining their stance and footwork even when facing quicker or more skilled opponents.
- Focus on communication between players, helping older athletes learn to call for help defense or switches when necessary, creating a stronger team defense overall.
