Purpose:

A competitive, physical drill designed to improve a defender’s ability to stay in front of their matchup.

Setup:

Place a cone in the center of the paint and have two players of similar size and speed matchup on the wing.

Execution:

  1. On the coach’s signal, the offensive player will attempt to drive to the hoop.
  2. The defender must stay in front of them and attempt to prevent penetration.
  3. The drill will go for 8 seconds before a new pair subs in.
  4. If the offense is able to get into the paint, they don’t shoot, they just bring the ball back out to the arc and continue the drill.
  5. After each pair has gone swap offense to defense and repeat.

Coaching Tips:

  • Make sure we aren’t building any bad habits, using our hands or committing blocking fouls in an attempt to stop a ballhandler that has us beat – focus on the fundamentals, staying low, watching the hips, and protecting the hoop first and foremost.

Tips for Younger Athletes:

  • Emphasize the importance of staying low and maintaining a wide defensive stance to enhance stability and balance.
  • Teach them to keep their eyes on the offensive player’s hips, as this will help in anticipating their movements.
  • Encourage using quick, short lateral steps instead of crossing their feet to improve their ability to stay in front of the opponent.

Tips for Older Athletes:

  • Focus on developing anticipation skills by reading the offensive player’s body language and first step.
  • Practice recovering quickly if they get beaten initially, using a drop step to regain defensive position.
  • Reinforce the importance of strong footwork and staying engaged without fouling, using body positioning to control the offensive player’s path.
