Here is a [tag]basketball coaching tip[/tag] to use with your middle school basketball team.
First [tag]basketball practice[/tag] of every season, have a 1-on-1 tournament. The kids have a lot of fun, and you can bring the team together to cheer for the winner.
Put 5 defensive players on the floor and ask the winner to score against them; obviously he can’t, so ask him what he needs to score. He replies that he needs some teammates. Ask him what he wants them to do in order for him to score, and he replies he’d like them to set some screens, get open, and help him get a shot off.
Then tell the [tag]basketball[/tag] team they have learned lesson #1 for the season–1 guy can’t do it all, that it takes 5 guys working together, sacrificing for each other, in order to score.
This starts the process of taking selfishness away from the team and focusing them on team goals rather than individual goals.
