We are always trying to help improve shooting whether it is shooting form or accuracy. Here are basketball shooting drills that work on both.
Shooting Form Drill
Have each player stand a couple of inches from the front of the basket.
Place the ball in the shooting hand AND without using the guide hand, shoot the ball. Upon shooting focus on form.
Have each player stand a couple of inches from the front of the basket.
Place the ball in the shooting hand AND without using the guide hand, shoot the ball. Upon shooting focus on form.
Make sure the shooting arm is set in a 90 degree angle (right angle) and the basketball is set on the fingers and not the palm of the hand. When releasing, focus on arm extension and follow through.
On the follow through make sure the ball rolls off the finger tips and remember to flick the wrist.
Tip: see if the player can make 5 baskets in a row without touching the rim.
Tip: as the player improves make them back up two steps and proceed with the drill.
Free Throw Drill
This basketball drill is real simple.
One at a time each player will shoot a one-on-one free throw while all the other players wait on the baseline under the basket. If the shooter misses the first shot then the whole team has to run two down and backs and if the shooter makes the first and misses the second then the whole team only has to run one down and back.
If the shooter makes both then they go to the end of the line and another player steps up to shoot and so on. The drill continues until the entire team had a turn to shoot the one-on-one.
Tip: This drill not only helps on perfecting free throws but also as the players go through the drill and many of them miss their shots…when it comes down to the last couple of players along the baseline to step up and shoot, they’re going to be winded. With them having to take shots under this condition will better them for a game and they will be able to handle the pressure under tiredness.
